What is PESA?

The PESA team will collate information about classical risk factors from the analytical data obtained during the annual medical check ups conducted by the Medical Services department at Banco Santander. Study participants will also undergo imaging analysis for the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis. The imaging techniques to be used include computed axial tomography (CAT), magnetic resonance and ultrasonography. In this way, without incurring any risk, the annual medical check up will be complemented by data about the state of health of participants’ heart and arteries.

The aim is to recruit 3000 volunteers; however, given the complexity of the study the team anticipates that achieving this figure will require a period of three years (2010-2012). The tests will be repeated in the same participants three and six years after their inclusion in the study. These repeat tests will be fundamental for detecting the appearance or progression of the disease.

Participation in the study is voluntary, and before consent is sought there will be a consultation process during which candidates will be provided with comprehensive personalized information about the study and can have any questions answered.
